Siloé Community Clinic has developed a wonderful relationship with Prescribing Hope, a non-profit that provides medical relief for impoverished communities. This past Sunday marks a year that Sarah Mayer, and Siloé’s medical team have been making the two and half hour drive from La Mision to the remote community of Jacumé. While the founder of Prescribing Hope, Bobby Malanga, arranges for a medical team to visit Jacumé each month, Siloé has regularly participated every two or three months, this past trip being our sixth time.
Our two teams have developed a good system together. The clinic day starts around 11 a.m. and ends after all patients have been seen—typically around 4 p.m. Usually we provide care for 20-30 patients. Volunteers from Bobby’s team pull patient charts and check vitals. Miriam Galaviz, Siloé’s nurse, obtains detailed patient histories and also checks patient vitals. Erin Fransen works with Sarah Mayer in the patient exam room. Sarah sees patients and prescribes medication, which then a volunteer from Bobby’s team fills for the patient. Varina Breithaupt, a nurse, also joined our team for her third trip to Jacumé, and worked alongside Miriam.
Bobby Malanga has been a tremendous blessing to Siloé through Prescribing Hope’s Supply Assistance Program. Whenever Siloé sends a team to see patients in Jacumé, Bobby provides us with much needed medications and medical supplies for the clinic. Recently, Bobby met some Siloé volunteers in Orange County to facilitate the transport of a large donation from Giving Children Hope. Bobby drove a full car load of donations across the border in Tecate, and then after the clinic day in Jacumé, proceeded to follow Siloé’s medical team back to La Mision to deliver the donations to the clinic. Thanks Bobby!
