Thank you OnSite Ultrasound!

by Clinica Siloe on May 9, 2012

We were incredibly blessed recently by visiting volunteers from OnSite Ultrasound in Monterrey, CA. Corey and Julie Gaston (and their two adorable daughters) spent several days with us in La Mision, and provided the Siloé team with basic ultrasound training that we hope to be able to put into practice in the near future. During two very long days at clinic, Julie conducted free ultrasound scans for 25 patients–including nearly every pregnant mom in the community! We normally have to pay for our patients to receive ultrasounds from a radiologist in Rosarito–Julie and Corey’s visit saved our clinic well over $1,000 in radiology fees!

He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap; he seats them with princes, with the princes of his people. Psalm 113: 7-8

Charlie and his wife Felicia live in a leaky one-room shelter in our community, just down the road from the clinic. They live on a single disability check, struggling every month to make the money stretch far enough to cover their food and rent… Read the post

Thank You Med Students!

We love hosting visitors and this past week had the privilege of having a group of medical students join us at clinic. Three physician assistant students from Loma Linda University and one DO (doctor of osteopathic medicine) student from Western University assisted with everything from seeing patients, to sorting medication, changing diapers and sweeping floors last week. Their great attitudes and eagerness to learn made it a great experience for the staff and patients of Siloé Clinic… Read the post

We said goodbye to our volunteer nurse, Becky Wood, this past Monday at a farewell party and ministry fundraiser at Ollie’s Pizza in Rosarito. We were amazed (and slightly overwhelmed) by the turnout–nearly 150 guests showed up! Thanks to the restaurant’s generous owner, Richard, Siloé Ministries received 25% of all sales throughout the evening. The restaurant was packed to capacity (and beyond), yet everyone seemed to have a great time and waited patiently to be seated and served… Read the post

Jose, our five-year-old patient with a brain tumor, is in Mexico City this week (Read our earlier blog post about him for background info). We’ve been told that they might operate on him this Friday. Please join us in prayer for a skilled surgeon and the best possible outcome for this little boy and his family… Read the post

Thanks to all of you who have been praying for Jimmy. If you haven’t read about the miracle of Jimmy’s surgery at Hoag Hospital, check out our previous blog post.

On Friday, Feb. 24, Jimmy underwent an 8-hour, delicate and complicated surgery to repair multiple congenital heart defects. The talented surgeons combined what would normally be two separate surgeries into one, using an innovative process… Read the post

Jimmy Update

February 20, 2012

Jose (“Jimmy”), our patient with a serious heart defect, was granted an emergency medical visa last week! He was escorted across the border this morning and is currently en route to Newport Beach, CA, where he will undergo tests tomorrow at Hoag Hospital. They will determine if surgery needs to be scheduled immediately or can wait until next week.

We’re very grateful for the many individuals who have helped make this a possibility… Read the post

Saving Jimmy’s Heart

February 11, 2012

Jose—who is known by “Jimmy” to his friends and family—first came to our clinic in February 2011 complaining of difficulty breathing, headaches, and heart palpitations. After a series of tests, we diagnosed him with a severe condition called coarctation of the aorta. In addition, he had significant damage to his heart valves.

Because he has Mexican Social Insurance, we had hoped that the government hospital would undertake the needed surgery to repair his heart… Read the post

Marco Antonio Update

Thank you to all of you for your prayers and support for Marco during this difficult time.

Marco has been doing well.  He is in ICU and has slept most of the day but has been awake at times, and we can see he hasn’t lost any of his vibrant personality.

After two days of debate, the surgical team, together with the radiologists and specialists from another nearby hospital, have decided they cannot be sure that all of the tumor has been removed… Read the post

Pray without ceasing for Marco!

February 4, 2012

Once again, we spent most of our day waiting for any news about Marco. He spent the day sleeping in recovery, heavily sedated with pain medication, waiting for a bed in ICU to open.  He is now settled in the ICU for the night. He had a few moments of wakefulness, where he was able to recognize the team that is here and communicate with us (including asking if he lost any hair!)

We are still waiting to hear the final results from the CT and MRI, which hopefully will confirm that yesterday’s 12-hour-surgery removed the tumor completely… Read the post
